10 Fun Horror Films for October

10 Fun Horror Films for October

Halloween is almost here. Time to turn the lights down, grab some snacks, and watch some weird shit.

I’m talking alien clowns, radioactive high schools, vampires next door, and enough fake blood to make you wonder who had to clean everything up afterward. Movies with ridiculous ideas, great monsters, and people behind the camera clearly having a blast.

These are ten films that belong in your Halloween rotation. Some are gross. Some are creepy. Some are completely off the rails. All of them bring something worth staying up late for.

Dead Alive movie gif

Dead Alive (1992)

Lionel is a painfully awkward guy trying to have a love life while dealing with his overbearing mother. Things get considerably more complicated when she’s bitten by a strange animal at the zoo and starts showing some seriously unpleasant symptoms. Lionel tries to keep the situation under control, which is a pretty big ask when your family problems start involving the undead.

This is splatter comedy taken to an absolutely stupid level, and I mean that as a compliment. The practical effects are disgusting, the physical comedy is relentless, and every attempt to fix things seems to create another mess. Perfect Halloween viewing if your idea of a good time involves laughing while occasionally asking, β€œWhat the fuck am I looking at?”

Fun fact: Peter Jackson said the production used maple syrup for its gore effects, and it started fermenting under the hot lights. Imagine that smell.

Bad Taste Peter Jackson movie gif

Bad Taste (1987)

If you weren't aware, I love Peter Jackson (even named my son Theoden), so here's some more Peter Jackson for ya. People have disappeared from a small New Zealand town, and a team arrives to investigate. What they find is an alien operation with a business plan that’s pretty bad news for humanity: people are on the menu for an intergalactic fast-food enterprise. Naturally, the response involves guns, chainsaws, and very little concern for keeping anything clean.

Bad Taste has the energy of a bunch of friends getting together and seeing how much insane shit they can put on camera. It’s scrappy, gross, and full of homemade monster-movie creativity. Throw it on with people who appreciate ridiculous gore and questionable humor. The title should give you a pretty good idea of what you’re signing up for.

Fun fact: Jackson filmed it with his friends over roughly four years, shooting mostly on Sundays. That’s some serious commitment to making a disgusting alien movie.

Fright Night movie gif

Fright Night (1985)

Charley Brewster loves horror movies, so he knows the signs when his new neighbor starts acting suspiciously like a vampire. Unfortunately, convincing everybody else is another matter. With nobody taking him seriously, he turns to Peter Vincent, a television horror host whose experience fighting vampires mostly involves acting like he knows how.

This one has everything you want for an October movie night: a creepy house, a dangerously charming vampire, great creature makeup, and a sense of humor that doesn’t kill the suspense. It makes the neighborhood after dark feel like a place where something could actually be waiting behind the curtains. Get comfortable, turn the lights off, and enjoy some proper ’80s vampire goodness.

Fun fact: Peter Vincent’s name combines the names of two horror legends: Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. A fitting tribute for a guy making his living hosting monster movies.

Killer Klowns from outer spaace gif

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

A young couple discovers what looks like a circus tent outside town. Inside, things are considerably stranger than your average traveling circus. Alien creatures resembling grotesque clowns have arrived, and their interest in the local population has very little to do with providing wholesome family entertainment.

The best thing about this movie is how thoroughly it commits to the circus theme. Cotton candy, balloons, popcorn, and familiar clown tricks all become part of its nasty little world. The creatures are colorful, ugly, and weirdly charming. It’s practically Halloween candy in movie form, assuming your Halloween candy might try to eat you back.

Fun fact: The Dickies wrote the theme song knowing only the movie’s title, according to the Chiodo brothers. Sometimes β€œKiller Klowns from Outer Space” is all the creative direction you need.

Class of Nuke Em High gif

Class of Nuke ’Em High (1986)

Tromaville High School sits right next to a nuclear power plant. Great planning. When radioactive contamination starts making its way into student life, including some very questionable weed, ordinary teenage problems take a turn toward mutations, mayhem, and things the school nurse is definitely not equipped to handle.

This is pure Troma chaos: loud punks, gross effects, ridiculous behavior, and almost no interest in good taste. Everything feels like it could fall apart at any second, which is a huge part of the fun. If you want your Halloween movie night to feel like a filthy midnight screening with everybody yelling at the screen, this should do the job.

Fun fact: Its original title was simply Nuke ’Em High. Apparently, this particular disaster needed a little more classroom context.

Psycho Goreman I do not care for hunky boys gif

Psycho Goreman (2020)

Siblings Mimi and Luke accidentally awaken an ancient alien destroyer buried on Earth. That sounds like a fairly serious problem, except Mimi has the magical gem that makes him obey her commands. She names him Psycho Goreman and proceeds to treat this terrifying cosmic nightmare like her own personal plaything.

The fun comes from watching a creature built for universal destruction deal with a kid who absolutely refuses to be impressed. Add a parade of bizarre aliens, bloody practical effects, and increasingly ridiculous cosmic drama, and you’ve got a monster movie with a huge stupid grin on its face. It fits right into a Halloween marathon full of rubber creatures and excessive bodily fluids.

Fun fact: Director Steven Kostanski named Guyver: Dark Hero, the sequel to another film on this list, as a major inspiration. The monster-movie family tree checks out.

The Guyver Mark Hamill movie poster

The Guyver (1991)

Speaking of The Guyver... Let's watch The Guyver! Sean discovers an alien device that merges with his body and transforms him into an armored fighting machine. Unfortunately, powerful people want that technology back, and some of the people coming after him aren’t exactly people. He’s pulled into a world of corporate secrets, monstrous creatures, and biological experiments that have gotten way out of hand.

This one earns its Halloween spot through sheer creature appeal. You get bizarre transformations, big monster suits, and fights that feel like somebody let the effects department run loose. It’s a weird mix of superhero action, body horror, and goofy comedy. Sometimes you just want to watch an alien armor guy punch a hideous monster. This movie understands that.

Fun fact: Despite the poster prominently featuring Mark Hamill alongside the Guyver helmet, he doesn’t play the armored hero. He plays investigator Max Reed. Luke Skywalker gets a different assignment here.

Nightbreed movie gif

Nightbreed (1990)

Aaron Boone is haunted by dreams of Midian, a mysterious place that seems to offer refuge to creatures hiding from the human world. As he searches for answers, he’s drawn toward an underground society of monsters with their own identities, rules, and secrets. It’s the kind of place you’d probably be told to stay away from, which makes you want to see it even more.

Nightbreed brings a darker mood to the lineup, along with a whole damn community of incredible creatures. Clive Barker makes its monster world feel strange, dangerous, and strangely inviting. For Halloween, that combination is hard to beat: an ancient cemetery, elaborate makeup, hidden passageways, and the feeling that you’ve stumbled into somewhere humans were never supposed to find.

Fun fact: David Cronenberg, the director of The Fly, plays Boone’s psychiatrist, Dr. Decker. One horror filmmaker putting another horror filmmaker on screen feels pretty appropriate here.

Reanimator movie gif

9. Re-Animator (1985)

Medical student Herbert West arrives with a glowing green serum and a pretty bold claim: he can bring the dead back to life. Fellow student Dan Cain gets pulled into his experiments, and it quickly becomes clear that getting a corpse moving again and getting it to behave are two very different problems.

This is exactly the kind of disgusting fun a Halloween movie night needs. Jeffrey Combs plays West with the confidence of a guy who thinks everybody else is an idiot, even while his experiments are creating absolute chaos. You get bloody practical effects, wonderfully nasty humor, and a scientist who could really use somebody telling him to put the fucking syringe down.

Fun fact: Makeup effects artist John Naulin said the production went through 24 gallons of fake blood. Apparently, bringing people back to life is a messy business.

Bride of Reanimator gif

10. Bride of Re-Animator (1990)

Herbert West and Dan Cain are back, and somehow neither has decided to pursue a less horrifying line of work. This time, their research goes beyond reviving whole bodies. West starts experimenting with individual body parts, while Dan’s emotional attachments help push their work toward assembling a woman from pieces of the dead.

If the first movie leaves you wanting more questionable science and things crawling around that absolutely shouldn’t be crawling around, here you go. Bride of Re-Animator takes the Frankenstein setup and fills it with bizarre creations, gross effects, and West’s complete inability to recognize when enough is enough. Put these two on back to back for a Halloween double feature with some seriously bad bedside manners.

Fun fact: The effects team included Screaming Mad George, who also co-directed The Guyver. That explains why both movies belong on a list for people who love weird monster shit.
